The scenes have been restored in the DVD editions of the show, though each came with a warning about the portrayal of African-Americans in the shorts. These scenes were removed or edited as they were seen as racially insensitive. Several of the shorts were edited because of another controversy involving a character named “Mammy Two Shoes” and instances of some of the characters in “blackface”. This caused several changes in the the later versions of the show to tone it down. A great worry was that children that watched the show may try to replicate what they saw, not realizing the possible danger of their actions or otherwise not caring. While it was cartoon violence and rarely had any form of gore, both Tom and Jerry have been hit with things that would most likely kill any normal person. The show has been the source of much controversy, the most common being the violence depicted in it. This noise was provided by Hanna himself, cutting off the beginning and end of Hanna’s recording to just leave the loudest and strongest part of the shout to be used. When Tom is struck, he usually makes a loud shout as he’s in pain. Tom and Jerry both attack each other with a variety of weapons, ranging from common household items such as brooms or bottles to swords and even guns. Jerry tends to be the one that comes out on top, however, usually with Tom receiving some sort of repercussion for it. Most of the episodes follow Tom’s various attempts to get rid of Jerry, using many different techniques and schemes in each episode. It involves a Cat (Tom) and a mouse (Jerry) who live in a house, where Tom is the pet and Jerry a pest.
